NEWS FROM THE FAIRWAYS BULLETIN 1-18-2019
Upcoming Changes to Course Markings
The USGA and the R&A have introduced the most comprehensive revision to the rules of golf since 1984. The SaddleBrooke One Golf Committee and Management have approved several more changes to the golf course markings based on the new rules of golf. These changes are being made to improve pace of play and ensure golfer safety. These changes will be made hole by hole and completed over the next two weeks.
1. No Play Penalty Areas - Will be marked by a red stake with a green top. Balls that come to rest in these areas must not be played as they lie, and golfers must take relief, as if it is a red staked penalty area, with a one stroke penalty, under Rule 17.1d or 17.2. The penalty for playing a ball from any No Play Penalty Area is a two stroke General Penalty under Rule 14.7a.
New Rules Resources:
FROM THE GOLF DIGEST NEW GOLF RULES & CHANGES TO THE LOCAL RULES AND 'NEW "WORDING" TO LEARN GOING FORWARD:
With the decision being passed by the USGA; there will be some changes to the rules of golf beginning Jan 1st 2019; the goal of these changes are to improve pace of play and make the game easier to understand and less confusing from the rules aspect.
The local rules here at SaddleBrooke and the way the golf courses will be marked will also go through some changes. The goal of the Golf committee and the pro shop will be to "educate" all of us on these changes.
The Golf Digest along with News from the Fairways; will slowly bring information a week at time to highlight some of these changes and "new" wording that will need to be learned as we move forward.
TODAY'S EXAMPLE OF A NEW RULE (1/1/19): There will be no penalty for accidentally moving your ball on the putting green or when looking for it . A player is not responsible for causing a ball to move unless it is “virtually certain” that they did.
The flagstick no longer has to be attended or removed when putting and there will be no penalty if a golfer hits an unattended flagstick in the hole.
Golfers will be allowed to repair spike marks as well as other damage on the putting green. There is also no penalty for merely touching the line of a putt.
Golfers can now touch the ground with their club in a hazard and can move loose impediments in a hazard without penalty.
TODAY'S EXAMPLE OF A NEW RULE: 'Regarding out of bounds or a lost ball. Instead of stroke and distance a new local rule allows the option of dropping a ball in the vicinity of where the original was lost or out of bounds, including the nearest fairway area, with a two-stroke penalty.
Basically if you blow your first drive into the woods you no longer HAVE to hit your third from the tee box. Instead you can play your FOURTH from the fairway.
TODAY'S EXAMPLE OF A NEW RULE:' In Regards to the FLAG STICK - Players will now be permitted to leave the flag stick in the hole while playing a shot from the green, and there is no penalty if the ball strikes the flag stick. This will help many things; and specifically it will help speed up play. In the past, players had to pull the flag stick from the hole or have somebody else (a caddie or another golfer) tend and pull the flag stick before the ball struck it.
SOME NEW WORDING TO LEARN: the word "Lateral Hazard or Hazards are going away forever.. and will be replaced by, "Penalty areas" and "No play zones". In the upcoming weeks there will be 'EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS' that will be here at the Golf Club in association with the Arizona Golf Association to provide more education going forward.
